Dairy foods include milk, yogurt, cheese, kefir, cottage cheese, and other products made from milk. Whether dairy fits well in a person’s diet depends on the product, portion, fat and added-sugar content, lactose tolerance, milk allergy status, health history, preferences, and the quality of the overall eating pattern.
Nutrients Found in Dairy
Dairy can provide protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, vitamin B12, and other nutrients. In the United States, many fluid milks and some yogurts are also fortified with vitamin D. The exact nutrient profile varies by product, serving size, fortification, and fat content.
Calcium and vitamin D support bone health, while protein contributes to the maintenance and repair of muscle and other tissues. Dairy is not the only way to obtain these nutrients. Fortified soy beverages, calcium-set tofu, canned fish with bones, selected vegetables, and other fortified foods can also contribute when dairy is limited or avoided.
Dairy Fat and Heart-Health Context
Milk products differ substantially. Butter, cream, high-fat cheese, reduced-fat milk, yogurt, and fermented dairy foods should not be treated as nutritionally identical. Saturated fat content, sodium, added sugar, protein, fermentation, serving size, and the food being replaced all affect the larger dietary context.
Research on milk products and cardiovascular outcomes is nuanced. Many observational studies do not show that total dairy intake consistently increases cardiovascular risk, and fermented products such as yogurt or cheese may differ from butter. That does not establish that unlimited full-fat products lower risk or that saturated fat no longer matters.
Current cardiovascular guidance continues to prioritize unsaturated-fat sources in place of saturated-fat sources. People with elevated LDL cholesterol, familial hypercholesterolemia, established cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or other risk factors may benefit from selecting lower-saturated-fat options more often and evaluating the effect through laboratory testing.
Does Dairy Cause Inflammation?
Milk products are not broadly inflammatory for every person. Reviews of randomized trials have generally found neutral or sometimes favorable changes in inflammatory biomarkers, although results vary by study design, participant characteristics, product type, and fat content.
Digestive discomfort after milk products does not automatically indicate systemic inflammation or an autoimmune reaction. Symptoms may involve lactose intolerance, milk-protein allergy, irritable bowel syndrome, another digestive condition, portion size, or a specific product. Recurring symptoms should be evaluated rather than labeled broadly as inflammation caused by one food category.
Lactose Intolerance and Milk Allergy Are Different
Lactose intolerance occurs when the small intestine produces too little lactase to digest all the lactose consumed. Symptoms may include gas, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea. Many people with lactose intolerance can tolerate some milk products, especially smaller portions, yogurt, hard cheese, lactose-free milk, or dairy consumed with a meal.
Pasteurization does not cause lactose intolerance, and raw milk contains lactose at essentially the same concentration as pasteurized milk. The lactase used to digest lactose is produced by the small intestine; it is not supplied in a clinically meaningful amount by raw milk.
Milk allergy is an immune response to milk proteins such as casein or whey. It is different from lactose intolerance and can cause hives, swelling, breathing difficulty, vomiting, or anaphylaxis. People with a diagnosed milk allergy should follow guidance from an appropriately qualified allergy professional rather than testing dairy tolerance independently.
Choosing Dairy Products
Start with the purpose of the food. Plain yogurt or kefir may provide protein and live cultures. Milk can provide protein, calcium, and vitamin D when fortified. Cheese can provide protein and calcium but may also contribute substantial sodium and saturated fat. Sweetened milk-based desserts may contain more added sugar and fewer nutrients per calorie.
Compare the Nutrition Facts panel for protein, calcium, vitamin D, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar. Fat level can be selected around calorie needs, preferences, cardiovascular risk, and how the product fits with the rest of the diet rather than assuming that one product category is automatically best for everyone.
When replacing milk products, compare the substitute rather than relying on the word “plant-based.” Fortified soy milk is usually closer to cow’s milk in protein than many almond, oat, rice, or coconut beverages. Fortification and added sugar vary, so check the label.
When a Dairy Elimination Trial May Help
A short, structured elimination and reintroduction may help clarify symptoms when it is medically appropriate. The process should identify which product, portion, and component may be involved instead of assuming that every milk product must be removed permanently.
Long-term avoidance requires attention to calcium, vitamin D, protein, iodine, and vitamin B12 depending on the rest of the diet. Seek individualized guidance for persistent digestive symptoms, suspected allergy, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, anemia, growth concerns, pregnancy, eating-disorder history, or a highly restrictive diet.
